Histamine Intolerance: Genetic Susceptibility and How to Resolve It

Ben Lynch, ND
A significant percentage of patient complaints are associated with histamine intolerance. The following disorders have all been linked to an impaired ability to metabolize histamine: pregnancy complications, seasonal allergies, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, autoimmune disease, cluster headaches, motion sickness, breathing disorders, itchy skin, food intolerances, and leaky gut. Discussions about histamine intolerance typically focus on mast cell activation disorder; however, it is also important to talk about why there is an overproduction of, or an inability to break down, histamine in these patients—and how to address it.

Detoxifying Gerontogens to Reverse Biological Age

Christopher Shade, PhD
Toxins can impact the healthy biological functioning of the human body. Although the body has an inherent network of detoxification pathways, toxins from the environment, food sources, and other external contaminants can accumulate over time. Because of this circumstance, detoxification has emerged as a core pursuit of an anti-aging lifestyle. Clinical protocols that influence the interface of the major detoxification pathways can provide patients with powerful and symptom-free detoxification support clinically associated with longevity.

Christopher Shade, PhD, graduated with a doctoral degree in environmental science/aquatic chemistry from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. He is the founder and CEO of Quicksilver Scientific®, a nanoparticle dietary supplement company where he has patented a mercury speciation diagnostic process to analyze human toxicity. Dr. Shade also founded the only clinical lab in the world offering mercury speciation analysis, and he has designed cutting-edge dietary supplements and protocols for detoxification, immune and foundational wellness, and longevity. Dr. Shade’s comprehensive understanding of mercury and its interactions with sulfur compounds, particularly glutathione, make him an expert in the toxicity and detoxification of heavy metals. He regularly speaks worldwide as an educator on mercury, environmental toxicities, neuroinflammation, immune dysregulation, and the human detoxification system.

A Natural Approach to Libido and Intimacy

Anna Cabeca, DO
The physiologic changes that occur with age can significantly impact libido and lack of intimacy in relationships. Hormonal shifts commonly lead to vaginal dryness and hot flashes in women. Men may experience loss of libido and physical symptoms, such as erectile dysfunction. In addition, stress contributes to physical disconnect by its effect on cortisol and oxytocin levels. Gut health can also influence libido and intimacy through the inner workings between the gut microbiome and the vaginal microbiome (known as the gut-vagina connection); directly relating gut health to hormones. The correct protocol is critical to balancing hormones and restoring a healthy, natural sex drive so that intimacy can flourish and relationships can thrive.

The Potential Of Neurologic Nourishment & Plasma Exchange To Improve Brain Function, And Promote Longevity

David Haase, MD

The health-restoring mission of functional medicine is actualized by finding and addressing the root cause of system dysfunction in individual patients. Removing factors that inhibit healing and replenishing factors that support healing play a central role in treatment. Growth and repair depend on the adequacy of raw materials, energy, and signaling molecules that stem from dietary intake. Results from an appropriate testing protocol can provide insight into a patient’s nutritional status and help determine if supplemental support is needed for optimal nourishment.

Regenerative Plasma Exchange™ is a therapy that endeavors to accelerate the salutogenic process of removing and replenishing factors that impact healing. The Personalized Systems Medicine™ guidance is a program that enables practical application in clinical practice with optimal nutrition support being crafted from individual test results. Both plasma exchange and personalized nutrition hold great promise for regenerating and boosting peak brain performance to optimize neurologic outcomes from Autism to Alzheimer’s.

More Than Hormones: In Search of Menopause Relief

Wendy Warner, MD
Historically, a decline in estrogen levels was deemed responsible for initiating the onset of menopause, and its varied symptoms rendered the replacement of estrogen the primary treatment. However, menopausal symptoms are also triggered by physiological fluctuations, such as blood sugar instability and adrenal dysfunction. Treatment protocols that support blood sugar balance and adrenal function play a role in the mechanisms involved in menopausal symptom relief, thus helping some women avoid hormonal intervention.

Diving Deeper Into Advanced Lipid Testing

Yousef Elyaman, MD

Despite the technological advances in prevention and treatment, cardiovascular disease is still the leading cause of death in America. The primary preventive approach is to decrease low-density lipoproteins (LDL), also known as “bad cholesterol,” yet 75% of patients hospitalized with myocardial infarction have normal LDL levels. Additionally, 45% of those admitted for a heart attack have healthy high-density lipoproteins (HDL)—or “good cholesterol”—levels. So, what is being missed?

According to current research, there is much more to the equation than the standard lipid panels focusing on LDL and HDL. Advanced lipid testing is part of an integrative medicine protocol providing further insight into cardiovascular risk factors allowing for individualized solutions to reduce a patient’s risk for a major cardiac event.
